What combustion means in plain terms
Featured Image for Combust Planets

A planet is combust when it comes within a certain number of degrees of the Sun in the same sign or in an adjacent sign depending on the tradition you follow. The Sun's light, which is treated as overwhelming in Jyotish, is said to suppress the planet's natural significations. The planet does not disappear from the chart, but its ability to deliver results through the house it rules or occupies is reduced.

The Sanskrit word is asta, meaning set or hidden. The metaphor is astronomical: when a star or planet rises or sets too close to the Sun, it cannot be seen from Earth. Jyotish extends this observation into a principle about planetary strength. A planet that cannot be seen is treated as one that cannot fully act.

Combustion is distinct from conjunction. Two planets can be conjunct without combustion if the orb is wide. And combustion does not mean the planet is in the same house as the Sun; it depends on degree distance, not house position alone.

Before reading any combust planet, confirm the actual degree difference between the planet and the Sun. Many charts described as having a combust planet are actually outside the orbs used by careful practitioners.

Orbs for each planet: the classical numbers

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the standard orbs that most North Indian practitioners follow. The exact degrees of combustion are defined below:

Planet Direct Orb Retrograde Orb
Moon (Chandra)12°N/A
Mars (Mangal)17°N/A
Mercury (Budha)14°12°
Jupiter (Guru)11°N/A
Venus (Shukra)10°8°
Saturn (Shani)15°N/A

Saravali and Phaladeepika give slightly different numbers in some chapters. The differences are small, usually one or two degrees, but they matter at the boundary. When a planet sits at exactly 12 degrees from the Sun, one text calls it combust and another does not. In those border cases, treat the planet as weakened but not fully suppressed.

Rahu and Ketu are never combust. They are shadow points, not physical bodies, so the Sun's orb does not apply to them. Lagna is not a planet and is also not combust.

Always measure degrees within the zodiac, not just within a sign. If the Sun is at 28 degrees Aries and Mars is at 2 degrees Taurus, the distance is 4 degrees, which falls inside the 17-degree orb for Mars. Some practitioners require the same sign; classical texts do not make that restriction uniformly, so check which tradition your teacher follows.

Why combustion weakens a planet: the logic behind the rule

In Jyotish, the Sun is the soul, the king, and the source of light for all other bodies. Every planet derives its visibility and in some frameworks its authority from its distance from the Sun. A planet too close to the Sun loses its individual identity. It acts more as an instrument of the Sun's agenda than through its own nature.

The practical read is this: the house the combust planet rules tends to produce results that are irregular, delayed, or dependent on the Sun's own condition. If the Sun is strong, the combust planet may actually ride that strength. If the Sun is weak or afflicted, the combust planet has no support and tends to underperform more sharply.

The planet's natural karakatvas, its significations, also come under the Sun. A combust Jupiter may reduce the confidence associated with Jupiter. A combust Venus may affect the ease of relating or material comfort. These are tendencies, not certainties. Check how the planet performs across all its layers before concluding anything.

Check whether the Sun is in its own sign, exaltation, or a friend's sign. A dignified Sun can absorb a combust planet more constructively than a debilitated or sign-weakened Sun.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra: Mercury Combust at 14 Degrees

According to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Mercury is considered combust when it comes within 14 degrees of the Sun in direct motion, and 12 degrees when retrograde. Because Mercury's orbit never takes it further than 28 degrees away from the Sun, Mercury is in a state of combustion more frequently than any other planet.

The GSC data shows that people search specifically for the 14-degree rule because it is the boundary line. When Mercury sits exactly at 14 degrees from the Sun, its intellect and communication powers are in a twilight zone. It is weakened, but not entirely suppressed. The closer it gets to exact conjunction (0 degrees), the more the native may struggle with expressing their ideas verbally, often preferring written communication or internal processing.

However, BPHS also notes that Mercury is highly adaptable. When Mercury is combust but in its own sign of Gemini or Virgo, or exalted in Virgo, the combustion effect is drastically reduced. The intellect remains sharp, though the native may still prefer to operate behind the scenes rather than as the primary spokesperson.

Planets that are more and less affected by combustion

Not every combust planet weakens the same way. Mercury combust is the most common condition in any chart because Mercury's maximum elongation from the Sun is about 28 degrees. Many people have Mercury combust and function as clear, capable communicators. The closer Mercury is to exact conjunction with the Sun, the more the combust effect tends to show, but even then it depends heavily on sign and house.

Venus combust is considered stronger in effect because Venus represents things that are opposite to the Sun in nature: comfort, ease, relationships, and pleasure. The Sun's heat is said to disturb Venus's significations more directly. Venus combust in a kendra in own sign or exaltation loses much of that concern.

Saturn combust is often read as creating friction because Saturn and the Sun are natural enemies. Combustion here can produce a person who struggles with authority, with the father, or with patience around structures and rules. Again, this is a tendency tied to multiple conditions, not a single-line outcome.

Moon combust, called Amavasya or new Moon, is covered separately in most texts as it is an astronomical event that has its own rules in muhurta. For natal reading, a Moon within 12 degrees of the Sun reduces the Moon's strength as lagna or house lord but is assessed differently than the combustion of Mars or Jupiter.

How to judge combustion alongside dignity
Technical diagram of planetary combustion in Vedic astrology

A planet in exaltation while combust is treated as significantly less affected than a planet in debilitation while combust. Exaltation gives strength of sign, and that strength partially counteracts the suppression from the Sun. Classical texts including Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra acknowledge this directly: a combust exalted planet is still weakened but retains much of its directional energy.

Own sign is similar. A combust planet in its own sign has the home-field advantage of the sign even if the Sun is close. Mercury combust in Gemini or Virgo, for example, often performs better than one might expect from the combustion reading alone.

Debilitation plus combustion is the harshest combination. Here both the sign and the proximity to the Sun reduce the planet's capacity. Check whether the debilitation is cancelled through neecha bhanga rules before drawing conclusions, but do not ignore the layered weakness.

Check the dispositor of the combust planet. If the dispositor is strong and well placed, it can support the combust planet's expression even when the planet itself is weakened in the Sun's proximity.

Combustion and house rulership

The house a combust planet rules is where the suppression tends to show most clearly in life events. If the 7th lord is combust, the themes of partnership, marriage, and business agreements may need more effort or go through delays before settling. This does not mean the person will not marry or partner; it means the house themes come with friction.

The house the combust planet occupies is a second location to watch. The planet is physically present there, but its ability to give results from that placement may be inconsistent. It may act strongly in some periods and withdraw in others.

A combust planet that rules a trika house (6th, 8th, or 12th) is sometimes read as positively altered: combustion of a naturally difficult house lord can reduce the harm that lord would otherwise produce. This is a minority reading and requires other factors to confirm it, but it appears in Phaladeepika and related commentaries.

After checking house rulership, check which dasha period activates the combust planet. The results tend to manifest most clearly in the planet's own mahadasha and in antardashas triggered by the Sun or by planets conjunct the combust body.

Cancellation and reduction conditions

Classical texts describe several conditions that reduce or cancel combustion. Exaltation in the same sign as the Sun is the most cited. If Jupiter is at 5 degrees Cancer and the Sun is at 10 degrees Cancer, Jupiter is combust but also in its exaltation sign. The exaltation strength offsets much of the combustion effect.

Own sign is the second main condition. Mercury combust in Virgo, Venus combust in Taurus or Libra, and similar placements carry reduced combustion effects in most classical readings.

Planetary war, or graha yuddha, is related but different. When two planets are within one degree of each other, they are in war, and the higher-latitude planet wins. Combustion and planetary war can occur together but are assessed separately.

Strong benefic aspect on the combust planet can partially offset suppression. Jupiter aspecting a combust Venus does not eliminate combustion but adds a stabilizing layer. Always check who aspects the combust planet and from what house and sign.

Timing: when combustion effects are most active

Combustion effects in natal charts tend to show most clearly during the mahadasha or antardasha of the combust planet. In those periods the planet is active but still operating under its natal limitations, including the combustion. The results of the houses it rules arrive with more effort, delay, or dependence on other factors.

Transits of the Sun over or opposite a natal combust planet's position can temporarily reactivate the tension around that planet's themes. This is usually a short window, a week or two, and is not a major timing indicator on its own.

Annual return charts and solar ingress charts can show a combust planet as a repeating theme in years when the Sun returns to the same degree area. This requires secondary chart analysis and is beyond a basic natal reading.

In muhurta (electional astrology), combustion is a stronger disqualifying factor than in natal charts. A combust Venus in a wedding muhurta is avoided in most traditions. The logic is the same but the sensitivity is higher because the event is chosen deliberately.

Practical rules that change outcomes

Rule one: always measure the exact degree difference. Combustion within 3 degrees is very tight and the planet's individual expression is substantially suppressed. From 3 to 8 degrees, the effect is moderate. From 8 degrees to the outer orb limit, it is mild. These gradations are not always discussed online, but they appear in classical texts and change the reading significantly.

Rule two: check the Sun's condition before judging the combust planet. A Sun in Aries or Leo acts differently from a Sun in Libra. A debilitated Sun in Libra that combusts Mars still affects Mars but does so from a weakened position. The suppression is less clean.

Rule three: a planet that is combust but placed in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house) retains directional strength and house-placement strength even if sign dignity is neutral. Kendras amplify planets, including combust ones. A combust Jupiter in the 10th may still produce career outcomes tied to Jupiter themes, though the path may be less smooth.

Rule four: when the same planet rules both a good house and a trika house for a given ascendant, combustion may reduce the trika rulership more than the good one. This is a chart-specific reading and requires knowing the functional nature of the planet for that lagna.

Check all four conditions together: degree orb, Sun's dignity, the planet's own sign or exaltation, and the house occupied. A single factor rarely tells the full story.

Worked examples: five hypothetical charts

Case one. Aries lagna, Sun at 15 degrees Aries, Venus at 20 degrees Aries. Venus is combust by 5 degrees in a tight orb. Venus rules the 2nd and 7th for Aries lagna. Both are important houses. The Sun is in its exaltation sign. The combust is tight, but Venus in Aries is already in a difficult sign (neither own nor exalted). Judgment: 2nd house finances and 7th house partnerships need extra attention in Venus dasha. Check whether Venus receives any benefic aspect. Check next: the condition of the 7th house and any planets in it.

Case two. Virgo lagna, Sun at 12 degrees Virgo, Mercury at 10 degrees Virgo. Mercury is combust by 2 degrees, extremely tight. However, Mercury is in its own sign and exaltation sign (Virgo is both). Judgment: the combustion effect is substantially reduced. Mercury still acts as lagna lord and 10th lord, and being in own sign gives it a stable platform. The person may have periods where communication or analytical work has blind spots, but Mercury's overall strength is high. Check next: whether Mercury is retrograde, which tightens the orb further.

Case three. Scorpio lagna, Sun at 8 degrees Leo, Saturn at 22 degrees Leo. Distance is 14 degrees, within Saturn's 15-degree orb. Sun and Saturn are natural enemies. Saturn rules the 3rd and 4th for Scorpio lagna. Judgment: 3rd and 4th house themes (siblings, home, mother, property) may involve friction, especially in Saturn dasha. The Sun is in its own sign Leo, so it is strong and dominates Saturn more forcefully. This is a meaningful combustion to note. Check next: aspects on Saturn from any benefic or the condition of Saturn's dispositor, the Sun itself.

Case four. Gemini lagna, Sun at 5 degrees Capricorn, Jupiter at 10 degrees Capricorn. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn and combust by 5 degrees. Jupiter rules the 7th and 10th for Gemini lagna. Double weakness: debilitation plus combustion. This chart needs a neecha bhanga check. If Saturn (Capricorn's ruler) is in a kendra, debilitation is cancelled for Jupiter. Even with cancellation, combustion remains. Judgment: 7th and 10th house results come with significant effort in Jupiter dasha. Check next: neecha bhanga conditions and the condition of Saturn.

Case five. Leo lagna, Sun at 28 degrees Libra, Mars at 3 degrees Scorpio. Distance is 5 degrees across a sign boundary. Mars is combust only if you use the across-sign approach. Mars rules the 4th and 9th for Leo lagna, both good houses. Judgment: if you include cross-sign combustion (which Parashara supports), Mars at 5 degrees from the Sun is in a tight orb and the 4th and 9th house themes may show suppression in Mars dasha. If you use same-sign only, no combustion. This is a real interpretive choice. Check next: which tradition your reading method follows and whether Mars receives any aspect from Jupiter or the Moon.

Common mistakes in reading combust planets

The most common mistake is treating every combust planet as destroyed or unable to give results. Combustion reduces a planet's independent action; it does not eliminate it. Many people with combust Venus have stable relationships. Many with combust Jupiter are knowledgeable and respected. The planet still delivers results, but often with more dependence on the Sun's strength and other chart factors.

A second mistake is ignoring the Sun's own condition. Online readings often say 'Venus combust = difficult relationships' without noting whether the Sun is in Aries, Libra, or Leo. A Sun in its fall weakens the combustion effect in one direction while adding its own problems in another.

A third mistake is calling any planet conjunct the Sun combust. Conjunction and combustion are not the same. A planet can be in the same house as the Sun and 25 degrees away and not be combust at all. Always check degrees.

A fourth mistake is forgetting retrograde adjustments. When a planet is retrograde, the combustion orb tightens in classical texts. Mercury retrograde combust uses 12 degrees instead of 14, and Venus retrograde uses 8 degrees instead of 10. A planet just outside the direct orb may still be combust if retrograde.

Check whether the planet in question is inside or outside the canonical orb with the retrograde adjustment before labeling it combust. Then check sign dignity before assigning outcomes.

Remedies and their realistic scope

Remedies for combustion exist in Jyotish tradition and center on strengthening the suppressed planet's natural significations. Wearing a gemstone associated with the planet, if other conditions permit, is one approach. Strengthening the Sun through gratitude or regular morning sunlight practice is another angle, since the Sun's own dignity affects how it treats the combust planet.

Charity and service tied to the combust planet's karakatvas are more universally suggested. If Venus is combust, giving toward beauty, art, or women's welfare is mentioned in several traditions. If Jupiter is combust, engaging in teaching or supporting educational institutions is a comparable suggestion.

No remedy changes a natal chart's core structure. What remedies may do is help a person orient their behavior in a way that uses the planet's energy more consciously, which reduces friction over time. Results from remedies are not guaranteed and vary by chart, effort, and period.

Check the dasha period before starting any remedy. A remedy begun in the combust planet's dasha may have more traction than one started in an unrelated period.

How combustion interacts with yogas

When a combust planet forms part of a yoga, the yoga's results are weakened proportionally. A Raja Yoga that involves the 9th lord conjunct the 10th lord is diluted if one of those lords is combust. The yoga still exists but its delivery is less reliable, more conditional on dasha timing, and more dependent on the strength of the other planet in the combination.

Budhaditya Yoga is the best-known example. This yoga forms when Mercury and the Sun are in the same sign. Since Mercury is always near the Sun, most Budhaditya Yogas involve a combust Mercury. The yoga is said to give intelligence and communication skill. Combustion here is understood as part of the yoga's character, not a disqualification. The closer Mercury is to the Sun, the more the intelligence becomes focused and inward rather than broadly expressive.

When both planets in a yoga are combust, the yoga is substantially diminished. This situation is rare since it requires two planets to both be near the Sun, but it can happen with Mars and Mercury or Saturn and Mercury in certain signs.

After finding any yoga involving a combust planet, check the dasha sequence to see when that planet's period runs. Yogas without a corresponding dasha activation rarely manifest as major life events.

How to judge combustion strength in real charts: a checklist

Step one: confirm the degree difference between the planet and the Sun. Under 3 degrees is tight. 3 to 8 is moderate. 8 to the outer orb is mild. Apply the retrograde adjustment if needed.

Step two: check the Sun's condition. Own sign and exaltation strengthen the Sun's domination. Debilitation weakens it. A strong Sun pressing a planet harder is different from a weak Sun doing so.

Step three: check the combust planet's sign dignity. Exaltation or own sign reduces the effect of combustion substantially. Enemy sign or debilitation deepens it.

Step four: check the houses the combust planet rules and the house it occupies. Focus your interpretation on those themes, not on abstract significations.

Step five: check aspects on the combust planet from benefics (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon) and malefics. Benefic aspect adds a stabilizing layer. Malefic aspect from Mars or Saturn deepens the stress on the planet's themes.

After all five steps, form a composite picture. One weak factor rarely produces a difficult outcome. Multiple aligned factors are what shift a placement into meaningful territory.
