Western Birth Chart Calculator

About this tool
The Western Birth Chart (natal chart) is a celestial snapshot of the sky at the exact moment of your birth — a map showing where the Sun, Moon, and eight planets were positioned across the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses. Your Big 3 (Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign) form the core of your astrological identity: the Sun describes your essential self and ego, the Moon your emotional instincts, and the Rising (Ascendant) the face you present to the world and the lens through which you experience life. Each planetary placement adds nuance — where Mercury sits describes your thinking style; where Venus, your values and attractions; where Mars, your drive and assertion.

Western Birth Chart

A natal chart is an exact astronomical map of the sky at the precise moment of your birth. It shows where every planet sat across the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses — a blueprint of personality, motivation, and the timing of life's major themes. All interpretations follow classical and modern Western tradition: Ptolemy, Lilly, Rudhyar, and Hand.

1
The Three Foundation Points of Every Chart
☉ Sun Sign — The Core Self
The zodiac sign the Sun occupied on your birthday. Changes sign every ~30 days. Your Sun sign represents core identity, ego, will, creative vitality, and the self you are consciously building across your lifetime. It is the sign most people know — and the one that requires the most conscious effort to fully embody.
☽ Moon Sign — The Inner World
The zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Changes sign every 2–2.5 days — requires a reasonably accurate birth time. Your Moon sign shapes your emotional instincts, security needs, habitual patterns, and the unconscious patterning absorbed in early childhood. The Moon is who you are privately, before you construct your public self.
↑ Rising Sign (Ascendant) — The Chart Frame
The zodiac sign cresting the eastern horizon at the exact minute of your birth. Changes sign every ~2 hours — requires an accurate birth time. The Ascendant sets the entire house framework of your chart and represents your outward manner, physical bearing, first impressions, and the instinctive way you engage with the world. It is the most time-sensitive point in the chart.
2
The 10 Planets — Psychological Functions

Each planet represents a specific psychological drive or function. The sign it occupies describes how that energy expresses; the house describes where in life it operates. Reading planet + sign + house together is the basic unit of chart interpretation.

Personal Planets — change sign frequently, highly individual
☉ Sun
Core identity, ego, will, vitality, creative self-expression, and the father or authority figures. The Sun's sign shows the style of consciousness you are actively building.
☽ Moon
Emotion, instinct, memory, the mother and early nurturing, security needs, habitual responses, and the body's rhythmic cycles. The Moon governs the inner life and domestic sphere.
☿ Mercury
Thinking style, communication, learning, information processing, short travel, and sibling relationships. Mercury describes how your mind collects, processes, and shares information.
♀ Venus
Values, aesthetics, attraction, affection, pleasure, beauty, and the style of relating in close partnerships. Venus governs what and who you love, and how you express that love.
♂ Mars
Drive, ambition, assertion, desire, physical energy, and the capacity to act and compete. Mars shows how you pursue what you want and how you handle conflict, anger, and initiation.
Social Planets — sign changes every 1–2.5 years, generational flavour
♃ Jupiter
Expansion, optimism, faith, higher learning, philosophy, long-distance travel, and where life offers abundance and meaning. Jupiter shows where you seek growth and find luck.
♄ Saturn
Structure, discipline, responsibility, limitation, time, karmic lessons, and long-term achievement. Saturn shows where you face your most demanding growth — and where discipline yields the greatest reward.
Outer (Generational) Planets — sign changes every 7–30 years
♅ Uranus
Rebellion, innovation, sudden change, technology, and collective awakening. Its sign marks a generation's mode of revolution; its house shows where you personally break from convention.
♆ Neptune
Idealism, spirituality, imagination, dissolution, illusion, and the transcendent. Its house shows where you seek dissolution of ego boundaries — where dreams and confusion intersect.
♇ Pluto
Transformation, power, depth, death and rebirth, shadow, and the collective unconscious. The slowest-moving planet — its house shows where the most profound, inevitable transformation is built into your life.
3
Signs — Elements & Modalities

Every sign is a unique combination of one element (the quality of energy) and one modality (the mode of action). These two systems give every sign its distinct flavour and provide a fast way to read the chart's overall emphasis.

The Four Elements
🔥 Fire — Aries · Leo · Sagittarius
Energy, enthusiasm, identity, creativity, and inspiration. Fire signs lead with spirit and are driven by a need to express and initiate. A Fire-heavy chart thrives on vision, leadership, and risk — and grows by developing patience and grounding.
🌱 Earth — Taurus · Virgo · Capricorn
Practicality, material reality, stability, and embodiment. Earth signs build, organise, and persist. An Earth-heavy chart excels at materialising and sustaining — and grows by developing flexibility and openness to change.
💨 Air — Gemini · Libra · Aquarius
Intellect, communication, relationship, and ideas. Air signs process the world through concepts and social exchange. An Air-heavy chart thrives in intellectual and relational territory — and grows by developing emotional depth and follow-through.
💧 Water — Cancer · Scorpio · Pisces
Emotion, intuition, depth, and empathy. Water signs navigate through feeling and the unconscious. A Water-heavy chart excels at empathy, imagination, and emotional wisdom — and grows by developing objectivity and clear boundaries.
The Three Modalities
Cardinal — Aries · Cancer · Libra · Capricorn
Initiating. Cardinal signs begin the four seasons and are natural starters — they launch, lead, and respond quickly to change. Strong at beginnings; can struggle with sustained follow-through.
Fixed — Taurus · Leo · Scorpio · Aquarius
Sustaining. Fixed signs sit at the heart of each season and are built for persistence — they commit, stabilise, and maintain. Powerful at seeing things through; can resist necessary change.
Mutable — Gemini · Virgo · Sagittarius · Pisces
Adapting. Mutable signs close each season and are built for transition — they synthesise, adapt, and prepare the ground for what comes next. Flexible and versatile; can lack decisiveness or groundedness.
4
The 12 Houses — Life Domains

Houses are the 12 divisions of the natal chart set by your birth time and location. Each governs a distinct domain of lived experience. The sign on a house cusp sets the tone for that domain; planets inside a house concentrate their drive there. Empty houses are not inactive — they are governed by their cusp ruler.

1st House · Self
Physical appearance, identity, and first impressions. The Ascendant degree sits here — the chart's most time-sensitive point. Angular: high visibility and impact.
2nd House · Resources
Income, possessions, personal values, self-worth, and material security. Describes your relationship with money and what you consider worth building.
3rd House · Mind
Communication, early education, siblings, short travel, and everyday information exchange. Describes how you think, speak, and move through your local environment.
4th House · Home
Home, family of origin, roots, ancestry, and the private inner life. The IC (Imum Coeli) sits here — the deepest and most private point in the chart.
5th House · Creativity
Creative self-expression, romance, children, play, and performance. Describes what you create and how you experience joy, pleasure, and desire.
6th House · Service
Health, daily routines, work habits, craft, and service to others. Describes how you operate day-to-day and your relationship with your own physical wellbeing.
7th House · Partnership
Marriage, long-term partnerships, contracts, and the qualities you project onto and seek in others. The Descendant sits here — the mirror of the Ascendant.
8th House · Transformation
Shared resources, sexuality, death and rebirth, inheritance, and psychological depth. Describes where profound transformation is built into your life's structure.
9th House · Expansion
Philosophy, higher education, long-distance travel, foreign cultures, and the search for meaning. Describes how you expand beyond the known and build a worldview.
10th House · Career
Public life, professional reputation, vocation, and your relationship to authority and social structures. The Midheaven (MC) sits here — the most publicly visible point in your chart.
11th House · Community
Friendships, social groups, collective goals, humanitarian concerns, and future aspirations. Describes how you relate to chosen community and collective endeavours.
12th House · Inner Life
The unconscious, solitude, spiritual retreat, hidden matters, and transcendence. Describes what requires surrender rather than effort — and where you work unseen.
5
Major Aspects — Planetary Relationships

Aspects are the angular relationships between planets, measured in degrees of the ecliptic. They describe how two planetary drives interact in your psyche — harmoniously, tensely, or through blind-spot patterns. Orb refers to how far the angle can deviate from exact and still count.

☌ Conjunction (0°) — orb ±8°
Two planets fused together, amplifying and blending their energies. Highly potent — can be harmonious or intensely difficult depending on the planets involved. The strongest aspect.
△ Trine (120°) — orb ±8°
Easy flow of energy between planets in the same element. Natural talent and ease — but can become complacency if never challenged. The most harmonious major aspect.
⚹ Sextile (60°) — orb ±6°
Opportunity and supportive exchange between planets in compatible elements. Easier than a trine to activate — requires a small conscious effort to make use of.
□ Square (90°) — orb ±8°
Friction and tension between planets in incompatible modes. The primary aspect of challenge and growth — where the most visible life difficulties and the most significant development occur.
☍ Opposition (180°) — orb ±8°
Polarity and projection — the two planets pull in opposite directions, often playing out in relationships. The challenge is integration rather than swinging between two extremes.
6
Retrograde Planets (Rx) in the Natal Chart
What retrograde means at birth
A retrograde planet appeared to move backward through the zodiac as seen from Earth — an optical effect of orbital speed differences. In the natal chart it signals that the planet's energy turns more inward: less automatically expressed outward, often subject to revision, internalisation, or delayed expression. Retrograde planets are not weakened — they are differently directed.
☿ Mercury Rx
Slower, more deliberate and thorough thinking. Communication may be more internal or non-linear. Often correlates with deep, ruminative intelligence and a preference for re-examining ideas before sharing them.
♀ Venus Rx
A more internalised relationship with love, values, and beauty. Often re-examines relationships and personal values at a deeper level. May take time to know what is truly wanted in partnership.
♂ Mars Rx
Drive and assertion turn inward. Energy may be directed into internal rather than external action — strategically powerful but sometimes perceived as passive. Often expresses after a period of internal processing.
♄ Saturn Rx
An especially internalised relationship with authority, discipline, and structure. May develop personal rules and standards more rigorously than those received from external authority. Strongly self-directed.
Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) Rx
These planets are retrograde for roughly 5 months per year, so retrograde status is statistically common and less individually distinctive. Their house placement matters more than their retrograde status in the natal chart.
Classical & Modern Sources
Tetrabiblos
by Claudius Ptolemy (c. 150 CE). The foundational text of Western astrology. Establishes the tropical zodiac, planetary dignities (domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term, face), the five major aspects, and the astrological rationale for house significations. All dignity systems in this calculator follow Ptolemaic principles.
Christian Astrology
by William Lilly (1647). The primary English-language source for classical Western house meanings, planetary strengths, and chart delineation method. House significations in this guide draw directly from Lilly's treatment of the 12 places.
The Astrology of Personality
by Dane Rudhyar (1936). The foundational text of humanistic astrology. Introduced the psychological and developmental framework for reading planets as archetypes of inner life rather than external fate — the basis for how this calculator presents planetary interpretations.
Horoscope Symbols / Planets in Transit
by Robert Hand (1981 / 1976). The standard modern reference for aspect interpretation, retrograde planet meanings, and planetary archetypes. Retrograde descriptions in this guide follow Hand's systematic treatment.
