Western Transit Calculator

About this tool
The Western Transit Calculator maps today's sky against your natal chart to show which planets are currently activating your birth positions: and what themes that activation is bringing forward. Unlike the natal chart (which is fixed at birth), transits are the living, moving sky: Jupiter crossing your Sun expands identity and opportunities, Saturn squaring your Moon asks for emotional discipline, Mars conjunct your Ascendant sharpens energy and assertiveness. The orb window controls how close a transit must be to count: tighter orbs give precision; wider orbs show the broader field.

Western Transits

Transits are the most reliable timing tool in Western astrology: they show when themes emerge, peak, and resolve by tracking the current sky against your natal chart. This guide explains what transits are, how to read them, and what the most important transit signatures mean.

1
What a Transit Is

A transit occurs when a planet currently moving through the sky forms a meaningful angular relationship (aspect) with a planet in your natal chart. The natal planet represents a fixed psychological drive; the transiting planet activates that drive according to its own nature and the aspect type.

The trigger mechanism
Think of natal planets as sleeping potentials and transiting planets as weather passing through those areas of the chart. When Saturn transits your natal Venus, it asks your relationships to become more serious and structured. When Jupiter transits your natal Mercury, your communication and thinking expand. The natal position holds the theme; the transit determines the timing and flavour.
Personal vs generational transits
Fast-moving planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) transit through your chart quickly: from hours to weeks. They trigger short, immediate experiences. Slow-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) move slowly and create periods that last months to years, marking major chapters in life. The outer planets rarely revisit the same natal position: when they do, it is a defining moment.
2
Major Aspect Types in Transit

Each aspect type has a distinct experiential quality. Transiting aspects follow the same logic as natal aspects but describe timing events rather than permanent dispositions.

☌ Conjunction (0°)
The transiting planet merges with the natal planet: the strongest, most direct transit. It can intensify, initiate, or overwhelm depending on the planets involved. Jupiter conjunct Sun marks expansion; Saturn conjunct Sun marks restructuring and accountability; Pluto conjunct Moon marks profound emotional transformation.
□ Square (90°)
Friction, pressure, and the demand to act. The most common aspect of crisis and growth. Squares produce visible, externally-driven events that require effort to resolve. They are rarely comfortable but consistently catalytic.
☍ Opposition (180°)
Polarity and confrontation through others. Oppositions tend to manifest as relationship events, standoffs, or situations where you must choose between two opposing forces. They ask for integration rather than choosing sides.
△ Trine (120°)
Ease, flow, and natural opportunity. Trines are the most supportive transit but require conscious use: they offer a window where things work with less friction. Action during a trine amplifies results. Passive waiting during a trine means the window closes unused.
⚹ Sextile (60°)
Opportunity and productive exchange. Sextiles provide access and opening: they require a small, deliberate effort to activate. They are often described as the handshake aspect: available when you reach out, invisible when you don't.
3
The Transiting Planets: What Each One Does
Fast inner planets: days to weeks
☉ Transiting Sun
Spotlights and briefly activates whatever it touches. Transiting Sun conjunct your natal Mars ignites energy and drive for a few days; over a natal planet it brings that planet's themes into temporary focus and visibility.
☽ Transiting Moon
The fastest transit: the Moon moves through the whole chart in 27–28 days. Moon transits produce emotional weather: a Moon-over-natal-Saturn day feels heavy and serious; a Moon-over-natal-Jupiter day feels expansive. Short-lived but noticeable.
☿ Transiting Mercury
Activates communication, information, decisions, and thinking. Strong around natal Mercury, Moon, or 3rd/9th house rulers. Mercury Rx periods during exact transit aspects cause communication delays or misunderstandings requiring revision.
♀ Transiting Venus
Brings harmony, attraction, social ease, and financial flow to whatever it touches. Transiting Venus over natal Jupiter is one of the luckiest short transits in the chart: brief but genuinely pleasant. Over natal Saturn: a short period of serious relationship consideration.
♂ Transiting Mars
The most physically and energetically activating personal planet. Mars transits over natal Sun, Mars, or Ascendant correlate with bursts of energy, assertiveness, conflict, or decisive action. Squares and oppositions from Mars produce friction; conjunctions and trines produce drive.
Slow outer planets: months to years
♃ Transiting Jupiter
Expansion, opportunity, and growth wherever it lands. Jupiter takes ~12 years to complete one orbit and spends about a year in each sign. Its transit over natal planets brings growth, opportunity, and abundance in that planet's domain. The most reliably optimistic outer transit.
♄ Transiting Saturn
The most consequential outer transit for practical life. Saturn takes ~29 years to orbit and stays in a sign for ~2.5 years. It demands structure, accountability, and maturity in the area it activates. Hard Saturn transits are rarely comfortable; they are reliably formative. Saturn to natal Sun marks a major chapter of reorientation and consolidation. Saturn opposition natal Moon (occurs ~age 14 and ~age 44) brings emotional seriousness and the need for honest self-evaluation.
♅ Transiting Uranus
The planet of sudden change and liberation. Uranus transits correlate with unexpected events, breakthroughs, reversals, and the dismantling of structures that are no longer alive. Uranus conjunct natal Sun (occurs ~age 42 and ~age 84) is the archetypal mid-life awakening transit. It rarely destroys what was actually working: it disrupts what was stale.
♆ Transiting Neptune
Dissolves, sensitises, and spiritualises. Neptune transits over personal planets are among the most confusing in experience and richest in retrospect. Neptune conjunct natal Sun can produce a several-year period of blurred identity, creative richness, spiritual seeking, or confusion about direction. Neptune square natal Moon brings heightened sensitivity, idealism in relationships, and potential for disappointment.
♇ Transiting Pluto
The deepest and most transformative transit. Pluto moves slowly (14–20 years per sign) and its transits to natal planets last years. Pluto strips away what is inauthentic, compels confrontation with power and shadow, and forces regeneration from the ground up. Pluto conjunct natal Sun, Moon, or Ascendant is a chapter-defining transit that does not leave you the same as it found you.
4
Retrograde Transits

When a transiting planet is retrograde, it appears to move backward through the zodiac as seen from Earth. This can cause a planet to re-cross a natal point multiple times, extending and deepening the transit. A major transit with Rx involvement often has three passes: direct, retrograde, and direct again: marking a beginning, a revision, and a completion.

The three-pass pattern
First direct pass: the theme is introduced. Retrograde pass: the theme demands revisiting, review, or reconsideration. Final direct pass: integration and movement forward. The retrograde period is not failure: it is the deeper processing phase of the transit's full meaning.
Which planets go retrograde
All planets except the Sun and Moon can be retrograde as seen from Earth. Outer planet retrogrades are common: Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are all retrograde for roughly 5 months per year. Mercury is retrograde three times per year for ~3 weeks each. Venus and Mars retrograde less frequently but for significant periods when they do.
5
Orb and Exactness

The orb is the allowable distance from an exact aspect angle that still counts as an active transit. Tighter orbs show only the most precise activations; wider orbs capture the broader field. For slow outer planets, the full orb window can span months or years: the exact date marks the peak intensity, but the themes are present throughout the approach and departure.

Approaching vs separating
An approaching transit (applying) is building in intensity: themes are arriving and becoming more felt. A separating transit is resolving: the peak has passed and the energy is integrating. The most powerful moment is exact or within 1° applying. This calculator shows both approach and separation phases in the timing window.
